About Us
The West of Scotland branch of the Nautical Institute has a large coverage area and extends from Stranraer in the South to Stornoway in the North. Our membership is spread across the area with a concentration in the Glasgow area. Within the branch membership area there is a long and proud seafaring tradition. In addition this tradition extends to other marine related activities and industries. An example of this is the building of arguably the worlds most famous vessel, the Queen Elizabeth II in 1967.
In more modern times Glasgow has developed into a major ship management ‘hub’ with many of the worlds major shipmanagement companies choosing to be located in the region. In addition the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies (GCNS) is renowed worldwide for it’s nautical expertise and is one of only four major maritime colleges in the United Kingdom. These and other maritime related local enterprises are not located in the region by chance. They do so because of the wealth of seafaring experience that is available. This experience is reflected in the local membership of the Nautical Institute.
One of our aims within this Branch is to share and develop our combined professional experience amongst cadets, junior officers and others keen to learn about the maritime industry. Being able to provide independent mentoring of young officers is part of our active program of events. More details can be found on the News and Events page.
Finally our Branch Mission Statement clearly outlines our collective aims and provides us all with guidance.
